Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) :Excessive Worry about General Things

All of have some general problems and some worries too but some people worry too much about daily life things that it interfere in their life. This stage is called Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).

What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)?

Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by persistent, excessive, and unrealistic worry about everyday things. People with the disorder, which is also referred to as GAD, experience exaggerated worry and tension, often expecting the worst, even when there is no apparent reason for concern. They anticipate disaster and are overly concerned about money, health, family, work, or other issues.

The difference between “normal” worry and GAD -

Worries, doubts, and fears are a normal part of life. It’s natural to be anxious about your upcoming SAT test or your finances after being hit by unexpected bills. The difference between ‘normal’ worrying and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is that the worrying involved in GAD is much more frequent and disruptive.

For example, after watching a news report about a terrorist bombing in the Middle East, the average person might feel a temporary sense of unease and worry. A person with generalized anxiety disorder, however, might be up all night afterwards and then continue worrying for days about a worst-case scenario in which his or her small hometown is attacked.

Causes of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)-

Due to the complexities of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, it is difficult to tell an exact cause. Research suggests that a number of factors, both environmental and genetic, may predispose a person to developing the symptoms of GAD. Experts agree that a cause of Generalized Anxiety Disorder may be due to an imbalance of certain chemicals in the brain.

Who Can Be Victim of Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Though any body can be a victim of this but Research has shown a 20% risk for GAD in blood relatives of people with the disorder and a 10% risk among relatives of people with depression.

Treatments of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) –

The two main treatments for generalized anxiety disorder are medications and psychotherapy. You may benefit most from a combination of the two. It may take some trial and error to discover exactly what treatments work best for you.

Psychotherapy treatment –

Also known as talk therapy and psychological counseling, psychotherapy involves working out underlying life stresses and concerns and making behavior changes. It can be a very effective treatment for anxiety.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the most common types of psychotherapy for generalized anxiety disorder. Generally a short-term treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on teaching you specific skills to identify negative thoughts and behaviors and replace them with positive ones.
